We offer one-to-one services in the comfort of your home or at our private maternity hub in Ellesmere Port. We will tailor the infant feeding preparation programme to you and family's requirements.
Our Service
We offer a comprehensive consultation where we will hear your concerns, listen to your previous infant feeding experience and build upon your existing knowledge.
The aim of the session is to ensure you get the insight and knowledge you need to enjoy a positive feeding and bonding experience with your baby.
Breastfeeding Preparation and education
Our individualised and comprehensive breastfeeding preparation programme aims to build on your existing breastfeeding experience and knowledge.
By the end of the session you will:
- Understand the benefits of breastfeeding
- Know how breastfeeding works
- Know how to position and feed the baby at the breast
- Understand how to identify if your baby is getting enough breast milk at each feed
- Understand normal behaviour of a new born baby.
- Know how to ensure your baby gets off to the best breastfeeding start
- Know how to ensure your breasts make enough milk for your baby
- Understand common breastfeeding problems and how to avoid them
- Receive an antenatal colostrum harvesting kit and know how to express milk in pregnancy
- Understand how to express milk once your baby is born, including the different types of breast pumps available.
- Understand how to feed your baby expressed breast milk, using various feeding methods such as cup, bottle etc.
- Understand how to store and prepare expressed breastmilk.
Every parent and family will be treated as an individual when receiving feeding support from us and any feeding advice or plans that we provide will always reflect your unique needs and circumstances. If this is not your first pregnancy you may wish to spend some time discussing your previous feeding experience and challenges, to better understand why they happened and how to ensure a positive feeding experience when your baby is born. This is a really important part of your feeding consultation and can be a very beneficial and powerful process towards achieving a successful breastfeeding journey with your new baby.
Bottle-Feeding Preparation and Education Sessions
We know that just like with breastfeeding, some parents would like to know more about bottle-feeding. For various reasons parent choose to bottle-feed their baby's with formula or with expressed breast milk. There is an assumption that if a parent is choosing to bottle-feed then they don't need any help or support. My Independent Midwife know that this isn't always the case and indeed parents who bottle-feed often need as much help and support as their breastfeeding peers.
Our individualised and comprehensive bottle-feeding preparation programme aims to build on your existing bottle-feeding experience and knowledge.
By the end of the session you will:
- Understand how to ensure you and your baby get off to a great start including bonding.
- Understand the differences between different feeding equipment and how to make the best choice for your needs.
- Know how to correctly sterilise baby feeding equipment
- Know how to safely prepare infant formula
- Know how to safely store formula and expressed breast milk
- Understand how to practice 'paced bottle-feeding'
- Understand how to identify if your baby is getting enough milk at each feed
- Understand normal behaviour of a new born baby.
- Know different ways to wind your baby
- Understand the differences between the different brands and types of formula milk available to buy.
